Social Communication

Social communication refers to the way individuals interact with others.

At The Speech Co we embrace a neuro-affirming approach to speech therapy. We recognise, respect, and value all neurotypes and communication styles. We believe that neurological differences, such as Autism, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and other conditions that affect cognition and communication are not deficits to be “fixed”, but natural variations.

Our aim is to support children to develop their unique strengths and communication by:

  • Tailoring therapy and the environment to ensure that emotional wellbeing and sensory support is at the core of our approach.

  • Collaborating with families to set meaningful goals that enhance quality of life.

  • Valuing and affirming neurodivergent characteristics and preferences.

  • Supporting and encouraging all forms of communication, including mouth words (i.e. ‘verbal’ speech) and multimodal communication (for example, gesturing, facial expressions, and alternative or augmentative communication).

  • Building a culture of understanding and of celebrating differences.

  • Helping children learn to advocate for themselves.
