Do I need a referral to be seen by a Speech Pathologist?

No, you do not need a referral to be seen by a Speech Pathologist.

Are sessions covered by Medicare or Private Health?

You can ask your regular GP about a Chronic Disease Management Plan (previously known as an Enhanced Primary Care Plan) to see if your child qualifies. This referral will grant up to five partial rebates per calendar year through Medicare.

If you wish to use your Private Health Insurance for an assessment or therapy, contact your provider to learn about your level of cover.

I have NDIS funding. Can I be seen at The Speech Co?

Our Speech Pathologists can see clients with a current NDIS plan who are Plan Managed or Self-Funded. Unfortunately, we are unable to see clients whose funds are managed directly by the NDIA.

Do you see adult clients?

Unfortunately, we do not offer services for adult clients at present. If you need help finding a suitable Speech Pathologist for your needs, please give us a call and we can direct you.

How long does an assessment take?

Most assessments will be completed within 90 to 120 minutes however this depends on what skills are being assessed. You can split assessments into separate appointments if need be.

How often will therapy appointments be scheduled if my child needs them?

Your Speech Pathologist will speak with you about their recommendations depending on your child’s needs. At The Speech Co most clients are offered weekly or fortnightly therapy sessions.

How long will my child be in therapy?

Each and every child is unique and their development varies. The length of time your child will attend therapy depends on many factors such as their difficulties, goals, support given, how often therapy is attended, and how much home practise is completed.

What can I do while I am waiting to see a Speech Pathologist?

We may not be able to see your child immediately as there is currently a high demand for Speech Pathology intervention. While you are on waiting lists, you may find it helpful to have your child complete a hearing assessment (particularly if they are having difficulty producing speech sounds clearly or following instructions correctly). You can speak to your GP about obtaining a referral for the hearing test.

Additionally, you may find it helpful to access the information on the NSW Government ‘Waiting for Speech Pathology’ website which outlines some strategies to help your child with their difficulties.
