Orofacial Myology
(also known as ‘Myofunctional Therapy’)

Orofacial Myology is a treatment that can assist with establishing and/or restoring function in the facial muscles during chewing, swallowing, breathing, and speaking. It focuses on the relationship between the muscles of the face, dentition, breathing, and sleep.

Orofacial Myology therapy may form a part of the treatment for the following conditions:

  • Mouth breathing and open mouth posture.

  • Poor sleep quality (night waking, laboured breathing, sweating, tossing and turning).

  • Snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA).

  • Poor oral rest posture (the tongue is not able to suction to the roof of the mouth).

  • Tongue, lip, and cheek ties.

  • High and/or narrow palate.

  • Teeth grinding.

  • Allergies and nasal congestion.

  • Speech misarticulations (such as lisps, difficulties with ‘l’ and ‘r’).

  • Discomfort when chewing.

  • Tongue thrust or immature swallowing patterns.

  • Saliva management (drooling).

  • Oral habits such as thumb sucking, pacifier use, etc.

  • Poor concentration, attention and/or behaviour difficulties.
